Bramcote College is looking to appoint a new chair of governors to lead its governing body from September 2025.
The chair of governors is one of the most important leadership roles in education. The chair is responsible for ensuring the governing body functions effectively and remains focussed on its three core functions:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding school leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of the school
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
The chair works closely with the headteacher to advise, support, and shape the school’s strategy. The successful chair must promote a culture of openness and debate and is responsible for enabling effective communication and collaboration between the board and the school’s executive leaders.
Who can apply?
The vacancy is open to everyone. We are looking for a strong commitment to improving outcomes for pupils, the ability to chair meetings well and get the best out of a team, a good understanding of the local community, and the ability to think strategically with a high level of integrity.
Although experience of being a school governor is helpful, there are other professional and voluntary roles which require similar skills and attributes that could be applied in the role of chair of governors. Training and support will be provided.

It also presents a significant opportunity for personal and professional development. You will learn to lead with confidence, build consensus, and inspire others to achieve common goals. Chairs must analyse complex information, consider diverse viewpoints and make informed decisions that benefit the school. It provides an excellent opportunity to develop financial acumen by offering experience in financial oversight and budget management. You will also play a key role in holding senior leaders to account, strategic planning, HR and performance management.
